Dear Bay Shore School District Families,

Welcome to the Bay Shore School District English Language Arts Department page!

Building sound literacy skills is an essential part of every child’s academic development. In Bay Shore, our students receive comprehensive instruction in reading and writing at each level, which prepares them for success across the content areas and in life beyond their educational experience.

Our scholars begin their journey in ELA in our primary schools, with foundational lessons in reading, writing, and word study through the Literacy Collaborative Framework. As students advance in grade level, they acquire more complex skills in reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, and writing through a Balanced Literacy Program in the intermediate buildings. We utilize a system of curriculum mapping to help create a uniform learning experience, horizontally and vertically, amongst school buildings and across grade levels. Our teachers are dedicated to instilling a lifelong love of the written and spoken word in students, through engaging and enriching lessons.

Our secondary department is also on the forefront of best practices in English Language Arts. Our many program offerings include Humanities, Regents, Honors, Advanced Placement, and International Baccalaureate, which provide our scholars with a myriad of opportunities to carefully select courses designed to meet their unique needs as learners. Students are challenged through rigorous, diverse units of reading and writing, which spiral in complexity and prepare scholars for future success in both college and career.

From the most formative years all the way through to graduation, our enthusiastic and knowledgeable teachers ensure that all of our students receive the best educational experience available.  I hope you will take the time to review our ELA curriculum in more depth; in doing so, you will discover the multitude of opportunities available for your child.
